The Courage to Enter the Chrysalis: Navigating Life Transitions and Personal Transformation

Caterpillar hanging upside down preparing to enter the chrysalis, symbolizing courage and trust during life transitions and personal transformation.

There comes a moment in life when something within us begins to whisper.

At first, it is quiet….A subtle knowing.

A feeling that the life we have been living no longer fits the person we are becoming.

For a while, we may try to ignore it, or we may try to stay where things feel familiar.

But eventually that whisper grows louder.

And it asks a question that cannot be avoided:

Will you stay where you are… or will you choose the path of becoming?

There is another layer of symbolism that makes sharing this reflection today feel especially meaningful.

Today (March 14, 2026) happens to be National Butterfly Day!

I didn’t plan this timing intentionally, but it feels like a beautiful reminder of the themes that have been unfolding in my own life—trusting the process of transformation, even when we cannot yet see the wings that are forming.

Sometimes life offers us small moments like this that simply whisper: You are on the right path.

Nature teaches us that transformation always begins with a choice.

Before the butterfly emerges, the caterpillar must first enter the chrysalis.

From the outside, the chrysalis looks still.

But inside, everything changes.

The caterpillar dissolves into a “goopy” stage of transformation, which scientists have called "Imaginal Cells" (my favorite, most inspiring part of the change process!). The old form breaks down completely before the butterfly can begin to form.

Transformation is not linear or predictable.

It is mysterious.
Uncertain.
Sometimes, even uncomfortable.

And yet, it is also where new life begins.

Navigating Life Transitions Requires Courage

Over the past year, I have found myself standing at this chrysalis threshold.

For many years, my work lived primarily in the world of education through my leadership with Educating Mindfully. That chapter has been deeply meaningful and has touched countless educators, leaders, and students.

But like many things in life, chapters evolve.

Our organization recently made the decision to begin sunsetting Educating Mindfully, honoring the impact it has had while allowing space for new possibilities to emerge.

At the same time, something else has been unfolding in my own life.

This past winter, I returned to Kripalu, studying with my teacher Anodea Judith. That experience helped me see with greater clarity what my heart has been quietly guiding me toward.

The work that has been living within my heart is asking to emerge more fully.

And like the caterpillar entering the chrysalis, I realized that transformation requires courage.

Courage to release the identities that once shaped us.

Courage to trust what is emerging.

Courage to step into the unknown.

The Messy Middle of Personal Transformation

In many ways, this season of my life feels like that “messy, goopy” stage of transformation.

Old structures dissolving.

New possibilities forming.

A deep commitment to the path my heart knows is mine to embody.

The work of The Butterfly Within® is becoming the space where the imaginal cells have formed, and it is where this transformation unfolds.

Years ago, I wrote a line in one of my children’s books that continues to guide me today. The caterpillar is speaking to the reader and says:

“Sometimes you need to trust and have hope,

just like me when I chose to wonder and when I chose to enter the chrysalis.

My choices, trust, and hope transformed me

so I can help make a more beautiful world.”

That message feels just as true for adults as it does for children.

Each of us encounters moments when life invites us to choose.

To stay where we are.

Or to trust the path of becoming.

What Does It Mean to Enter the Chrysalis During a Life Transition?

Entering the chrysalis is a metaphor for the stage of life when our old identity no longer fits, and a new path is beginning to emerge.

During major life transitions, people often experience uncertainty, reflection, and change before stepping into a new version of themselves.

Just as the caterpillar must dissolve before becoming a butterfly, personal transformation often requires courage, trust, and patience.

Why Life Transitions Feel Uncomfortable

Life transitions often feel uncomfortable because they require us to release familiar identities, routines, and expectations.

During this stage, the future is not yet fully formed, which can create uncertainty.

However, this in-between stage is often where the most meaningful personal growth and identity transformation begin.

When we understand this stage as part of the transformation process, it becomes easier to trust the unfolding.

The Emergence of Guided Metamorphosis

In December, I hosted what I thought would be a “small, one-time pop-up experience”.

But something powerful happened in that space.

The conversations, reflections, and transformations that unfolded for 30 days after the workshop made it clear that this experience was meant to become something more—MUCH more.

It is now evolving into my signature experience called Guided Metamorphosis—a space devoted to supporting people through the stages of transformation.

More about this journey will unfold in the months ahead.

An Invitation to Continue the Journey

In Tulum, Mexico May, 2026!

In May, I will also be co-guiding a retreat in Mexico with Payton Keily from Peak Yoga & Wellness—an opportunity to step away from daily life and reconnect with the deeper callings of the heart.

Retreat experiences often become powerful catalysts for transformation, offering the space and presence needed for clarity to emerge.

If this resonates with you, Payton and I would love to have you join us!

Follow the Journey of Becoming

Over the coming months, I will be sharing reflections, practices, and insights from this unfolding journey.

If you would like to follow along, I invite you to stay connected.

You can begin by downloading one of the free reflective tools created for moments of transformation:

Ignite Your Butterfly Wish

and/or

The Heart Compass

Both are designed to help you reconnect with your inner compass during moments of change and becoming.

Next week, I will be heading out on a road trip—a small pause before returning with a renewed commitment to the unfolding path of The Butterfly Within®.

The journey of becoming continues.

And perhaps the question life is asking you right now is the same one it has been asking me:

What is ready to emerge within you?

I am looking forward to seeing who you are becoming!

Your metamorphosis is waiting! Ready to take action?

The Chrysalis Stage of Personal Transformation

In the work I guide through The Butterfly Within®, I often refer to this moment of change as entering the chrysalis. It is the stage of personal transformation when our old identity begins to dissolve, and a new version of ourselves is forming. During this time, life may feel uncertain or unfamiliar, yet it is also a powerful stage of becoming. Just as the caterpillar must enter the chrysalis before becoming a butterfly, people navigating life transitions often move through a similar process of reflection, courage, and emergence.

If you feel you are in this chrysalis stage of life, you may find support through the reflective tools available through The Butterfly Within®, including the Heart Compass and Ignite Your Butterfly Wish.
